Homemade Hot Chocolate
Our Hot Chocolate recipe is a perfect warm-up for cold winter days. Forget the store-bought mass-produced stuff! You can whip up a batch of your own hot chocolate made from scratch. Below the master recipe, be sure to check out our homemade hot chocolate varieties.
That way you will have a variety of ways to make hot chocolate after a day of skating on the Rideau Canal, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, or winter hiking. We suggest serving this hot beverage with homemade biscotti from Pasticceria Gelateria Italiana.
Homemade Hot Chocolate
Ingredients
- 2 cups 3.5% homogenized milk
- 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- ¼ cup dark chocolate 70% or higher
Instructions
- In a medium-sized pot, bring the milk to a boil.
- Reduce the heat. Sprinkle in cocoa powder, brown sugar, anddark chocolate.
- Continue to stir, until all ingredients are melted and combined.
Hot Beverage Variations
This is our basic Hot Chocolate Recipe. Here are some variations to try, based on the same recipe.
Cinnamon Orange Hot Chocolate
Add 1 tablespoon of grated orange peel and 1 teaspoon of cinnamon to the milk. Continue to make as directed. Strain before serving.
We love this with an added cinnamon stick and mini marshmellows. And of course cookies!
Hot Chocolate Orange Liqueur
Add 1 tablespoon of freshly grated orange peel and 2 tablespoons orange liqueur. Think Aperol, Grand Marnier, or even Orange Curaçao. Strain before serving.
